This week we’re exploring the ENTP personality type from the Myers Briggs Type Indicator. The ENTP is one of 16 personality types, and the acronym stands for Extraverted, Intuitive, Thinking, and Perceiving.
Those who are ENTPs are typically described as innovative, clever, and expressive. They are often idea-oriented, hence the description of ‘the debater’. They are typically not that interested in the here-and-now details, and prefer to think about ideas and theories. This type of personality accounts for approximately 5% to 10% of the population, so they are reasonably rare.
So, what are the key characteristics of ENTPs? They like to interact with a variety of people and are really good at making conversation – they also enjoy debating matters. They tend to focus on the future as opposed to what’s happening presently. This means that they might find themselves starting projects and not finishing them as they’re so focused on the bigger picture.
They like being around others, especially if they can engage in a conversation or debate about a topic of interest. ENTPs are often relaxed and easy to get along with. On the flip side though, they can become too enthralled in their ideas or plans that they lose sight of their close relationships. They don’t tend to judge, and rather than making a decision they would rather wait and see what happens. Another character trait is that they are very curious and determined to understand the world around them. They have a thirst for knowledge and ideas, and quickly arrive at conclusions. They have the ability to understand new things relatively quickly.
There is a misconception than ENTPs enjoy arguing for the sake of it. However, they enjoy debating as a way to explore a topic, other people’s beliefs, and helping others see the other side of the story.
ENTPs have many strengths: they’re innovative, creative, and great at making conversations. They enjoy debating and value knowledge. However, they can be argumentative. They dislike routine and being controlled, they can also be unfocused and insensitive.
They can experience success in a wide range of careers. Popular career choices include: engineer, lawyer, scientist, psychologist, inventor, psychiatrist, and journalist.
