8 WISE WAYS TO PROTECT YOUR WELLBEING AT UNIVERSITY

This month sees thousands of young people across the UK make the move to university. For many, this means leaving home and moving to a new and unfamiliar city, or even country! A new environment, added to having to make new friends, attend classes and study, and navigate new independence and much more, can definitely be overwhelming!

Whilst University is a great time for many people, the experience can also take a toll on your wellbeing. Today, we’re going to be talking through our 8Wise™️ approach and how you can use it to look after each element of your wellness.

  1. Physical Wellness

This is one of the first wellness elements to be neglected at university. Lots of drinking, numerous ready meals and a lack of sleep can be very common for students. However, it’s detrimental to your Physical Wellness. Make sure you’re drinking plenty of water, getting between seven and nine hours of sleep, and eating a healthy and balanced diet. BBC Good Food has some great recipe ideas for students. Also – limit your alcohol intake!

  1. Financial Wellness

Students are notoriously ‘broke’ but that doesn’t mean you can’t experience Financial Wellness! Make sure you keep track of your spending and set a monthly budget that you can realistically stick to.

  1. Occupational Wellness

Many students opt for a part time job to support themselves during University. A healthy and enjoyable workplace environment is important for Occupational Wellness, and a great way to achieve this is to make friends with your colleagues. You can also talk to your employer about your University commitments as they may be able to work around your schedule.

  1. Social Wellness

Going to university not knowing anyone can seem very daunting. Having close connections is essential to our Social Wellness so it’s important to try and make friends. If you’re worried about this, don’t be! Remember everyone is in the same boat as you. You’ll likely find things in common with your house or hall mates, and those on your course. You can also join clubs and societies to meet people with similar interests.

  1. Environmental Wellness

Your environment has a huge impact on your wellness and mental health. Try and keep your desk clear from clutter and let the natural light into your room. You should also try and get outside in nature. A great excuse to explore your local parks!

  1. Intellectual Wellness

Intellectual Wellness is a huge part of the university experience, as the main objective is to learn! Pick modules that you’re interested in as you’re likely to find these the most enjoyable. It’s also a good idea to try and identify your personal learning style as it will make revising and studying more effective and enjoyable.

  1. Spiritual Wellness

A great way to boost Spiritual Wellness whilst a university is to join a society or club that aligns with your values and beliefs. That could be a yoga club, eco-friendly society, a music group – the list goes on! Meditation and journalling is also a great way to improve Spiritual Wellness.

  1. Emotional Wellness

University can be stressful, especially during essay or exam times. Finding ways to manage your stress levels is a great way to improve your Emotional Wellness. Practicing mindfulness and self care are also a good thing to do.
