8 Wise Ways to Managing Anxiety: Grounding Techniques Part 4

These grounding techniques are tools we share in the 8Wise™ Wellness Programme and can be used in the moment that anxiety strikes to manage the symptoms and calm yourself within the situation.

Give them a go and start living the 8 Wise Way for optimal mental health and wellbeing and an improved quality of life.

GROUNDING TECHNIQUE  1: ADULT COLOURING

Adult colouring books have exploded in popularity in recent years, and for a good reason. Colouring helps you focus on a pleasant task, which can promote a sense of calmness and mindfulness. 

GROUNDING TECHNIQUE  2: FAVOURITE THINGS

List your favourite things; like all your favourite foods, your favourite colours, your favourite types of physical activities. It’s therapeutic as you are reminded of all of the things that bring you joy

GROUNDING TECHNIQUE  3: SIT WITH YOUR PETS

Spending time with your pet can be very therapeutic. Studies show that the vibrations that your animals make can help to reduce feelings of anxiety in your body.

GROUNDING TECHNIQUE  4: PLAN AN ACTIVITY

Plan a hike, plan a meal, plan to go to a concert with friends, plan a dinner out with family, and anything else that you feel would be beneficial for your wellbeing.

GROUNDING TECHNIQUE  5: LISTEN TO MUSIC

Listening to a favourite song is a great way to distract yourself momentarily. Why not make a playlist of the music you love to distract you when you’re feeling anxious.

GROUNDING TECHNIQUE  6: SELF COMPASSION

Practice positive self-talk. Take some time to write out all of the ways in which you contribute to the world and all of your favourite qualities about yourself. Look at this list when you are feeling overwhelmed.

GROUNDING TECHNIQUE  7: COOK

Follow a recipe for your favourite food.  Following the guidelines with all the measurements can help distract your amygdala and all the smells, textures and flavours will boost mindfulness through the senses.

GROUNDING TECHNIQUE  8: FIND A THERAPIST

If you have tried all these grounding techniques and you are still struggling with anxiety then work with a therapist who can help you manage the anxiety and deal with the triggers and potential root cause too.
