Understanding Life Events Through the 8Wise® Lens
By Kim Rutherford - Psychotherapist and Creator of the 8Wise® Method
Life Is Not Static
Life rarely moves in a straight line. Over time, most people will experience periods where something significant shifts. A relationship may end. A career may change direction. A health issue might appear. A loved one may pass away. Financial circumstances may alter. A new chapter may begin.
Sometimes these changes arrive suddenly. In other cases, they build gradually until one day we realise something in life needs to change. These moments are often referred to as life events.
While some life events can be positive or chosen, such as starting a family or changing career, they can still bring uncertainty, adjustment and pressure. Even changes we want can require significant emotional and practical adaptation.
What many people notice during these periods is that life can begin to feel more complicated than usual. Decisions feel heavier. Thoughts become busier. Energy can feel lower. Confidence may fluctuate. This does not necessarily mean something is wrong. Often it simply reflects the reality that several aspects of life may be shifting at the same time.
"Instead of asking 'What is wrong with me?', a more helpful question becomes: 'What pressures are currently affecting my life?'"
Why Life Events Affect Wellbeing
Life events rarely affect just one area of life. For example, losing a job may create financial pressure, affect confidence, disrupt daily routine and change family dynamics. A relationship breakdown might influence emotional wellbeing, living arrangements, social connections and long-term plans.
Because these situations touch multiple areas of life at once, they naturally increase the overall pressure a person is navigating. When pressure increases, the mind and body must work harder to process change, make decisions and adapt to new circumstances.
It is during these periods that people often begin to feel overwhelmed or uncertain about how to move forward. Understanding this dynamic can be helpful, because it reminds us that what we are experiencing is not necessarily a personal failing. Often it is simply the result of several life pressures appearing at the same time.
Seeing Life Through the 8Wise® Lens
The 8Wise® Model looks at life through eight key dimensions of wellbeing. These dimensions represent the main areas of life that influence how we think, feel and function. They include areas such as:
Emotional wellbeing
Physical wellbeing
Social relationships
Work and purpose
Financial stability
Thinking and learning
Environment and daily structure
Meaning and direction
When life is relatively stable, these areas often sit in a workable balance. However, when a significant life event occurs, several of these dimensions can be affected simultaneously. For example, a career change may influence financial stability, identity, routine and long-term plans. Looking at life through this wider lens can help people see that what they are experiencing is rarely a single isolated problem. More often, it is a combination of pressures across different parts of life.
Pressure and Capacity
One of the central ideas behind the 8Wise® Method is the relationship between life pressure and personal capacity. Life will always involve a certain level of pressure. Responsibilities, relationships, work and change are all part of being human.
However, when pressure begins to increase across multiple areas at once, our capacity to manage everything can start to feel stretched. During these periods people may notice signs such as overthinking decisions, difficulty concentrating, feeling mentally or emotionally overwhelmed, or struggling to see a clear way forward.
The Purpose of This Series
The Life Through the 8Wise® Lens series explores how common life events affect wellbeing and why they can sometimes feel so overwhelming. Across this series we will look at situations such as burnout, career change, redundancy, relationship breakdown, bereavement, illness, and financial pressure.
The goal is to help people step back, understand the pressures affecting their life, and approach change with greater clarity. Sometimes the first step toward navigating a challenging period is simply seeing the situation more clearly.
What Psychology Research Tells Us
Psychological research has consistently shown that major life events place real pressure on our mental and emotional systems. Studies on life stress, including the work of Holmes and Rahe, demonstrate that events such as relationship changes, job transitions, financial pressure, illness, or loss all require significant psychological adjustment.
When several of these events happen close together, the strain on our capacity to cope can increase dramatically. Mental health struggles often emerge when the pressures of life begin to exceed the resources we have available to manage them.
Start With the 8Wise® Assessment
If you are currently navigating a challenging life situation, the best place to begin is the 8Wise® Assessment.
The assessment helps you step back and understand how the pressures you are experiencing may be affecting different areas of your life.
From there, you can begin developing a clearer picture of what support, adjustments or next steps may help move things forward.
