Wednesday (November 3rd) was National Stress Awareness Day. Stress affects all of us – it’s an evolutionary response to help us deal with pressure or danger. It’s what is triggered during our ‘fight or flight’ response, and our stress levels typically return to normal when the danger passes. However, when we experience too much stress for too long, it can be very damaging to our health.

Recent research by Mental Health Foundation shows that at some point in 2020, 74% of people in the UK felt so stressed that they couldn’t cope.

So let’s take a look at how stress impacts each element of our 8Wise™️ model…

  1. Physical Wellness

It’s true that stress can manifest itself in physical symptoms. It can cause things like headaches, increased blood pressure (which increases your risk of stroke or heart attack), nausea, digestive issues, muscle pain, and a weakened immune system. You may notice that you catch a lot more colds and infections when you are stressed.

  1. Emotional Wellness

Stress can make it difficult to manage our emotions. We may feel more irritable or sad. Too much stress can even lead to mental health issues such as depression and anxiety.

  1. Social Wellness

Have you ever felt so stressed out that all you want to do is cancel all your plans and spend the day on the sofa? Not only can stress impact our emotions and body, it can impact our social life too. It can cause you to withdraw from loved ones, which can then cause our mental wellness to decline even more.

  1. Occupational Wellness

Stress contributes to a decreased organisational performance, an increased error rate, and poor work quality. Stress can even cause some people to resign from their job, or take time off.

  1. Financial Wellness

Following on from Occupational Wellness, if stress impacts work life it may even mean that the ability to earn money is jeopardised.

  1. Spiritual Wellness

Stress can cause us to question ourselves and our purpose, and it can make us feel hopeless.

  1. Environmental Wellness

Sometimes when we’re stressed, the last thing we want to do is get outside for some fresh air, or spend some time decluttering our surroundings. When we feel like this, our environmental wellness suffers.

  1. Intellectual Wellness

Similarly to environmental wellness, if our stress levels are too high then we may feel disinterested in pursuing our hobbies, or taking the time to further develop our minds.

It’s important to protect ourselves from high levels of stress so that we can look after our wellness and overall happiness. By having effective stress management techniques at your disposal, you can ensure that your eight wellness elements aren’t negatively impacted. On the flip side, by nurturing each of the wellness elements, you can protect yourself from the adverse affects of stress.
