The start of this week saw England lift the majority of the remaining covid19 restrictions, meaning no more masks or social distancing, and the reintroduction of large events and nightclubs. Many people have voiced their anxieties and worries about this, so if you feel this way just know that you’re not alone. It’s really important to practice self care during these times (ideally every day!).

So what is self care? Well, it’s all about looking after yourself so that you can be healthy both physically and mentally, can perform your responsibilities and live a happy life. Self care has gained more and more interest over the years; according to Google Trends, the number of searches for it have more than doubled in the last six years.

According to The World Health Organisation, self care is defined as: “the ability of individuals, families, and communities to promote health, prevent disease, maintain health, and to cope with illness and disability with or without the support of a healthcare provider.” It includes everything that contributes to physical health such as hygiene, exercise and nutrition, plus steps you can take to manage stress and look after your mental wellness.

So how can you incorporate self care into your daily routine? Here are 10 really simple ways that you can look after yourself every day…

  1. Enjoy a cup of chamomile tea
  2. Practice meditation every morning
  3. Do some yoga
  4. Go for a walk around a local nature spot
  5. Establish a relaxing sleep routine (and get your eight hours a night!)
  6. Meet your friend for dinner or a coffee
  7. Keep a gratitude journal
  8. Eat plenty of fruit and vegetables every day
  9. Say no to things that will cause unnecessary stress
  10. Read a book

Self care doesn’t have to be difficult or expensive. It can be as simple as the above. Try and include acts of self care every day – it really is essential for our health.
