Simply put, mental health is our emotional, psychological and social wellbeing. Just like physical health everyone has mental health that affects our thoughts, our emotions and our behaviour. Together with being physically healthy, being mentally healthy leads to a productive and fulfilling life. Both are equally important. Our society has reached a point that we no longer stigmatize physical health issues, yet even now mental health is something many do not pay attention to. We go to the gym or eat nutritious food to maintain our physical wellbeing, why can’t we see a therapist or engage in activities to ensure our mental wellbeing?
Good mental health means we can have good relationships, are resilient in the face of adversity, can adapt to changes and can make sound decisions. Why shouldn’t we pay more attention to our mental health?
The problem is that, more often than not, mental health is conflated with mental health issues or with mental illness, when what it really is a means of coping with whatever life throws our way. Good mental health means achieving emotional balance, effective decision-making and lucrative social/work interactions – all of which result in a productive life.
My aim in this book is to help you to not only understand what good mental health is, but also guide you to achieve it. The 8Wise™ Way has been developed to start with this basic fact: good mental health means a life well lived. In this book, I will guide you towards that path.
